Mar 8 - Week 7 & 8 Progress Report

Preamble

After the meeting on Mar 7, the project milestone schedule are updated to the following. Some milestones were not achieved by Mar 7 for the week 7 & 8 progress goal, thus this week (week 9) is a bit of catch-up week.

Timeline

Week 7 & 8 Project Update

Island Map (Detail terraforming)

Figure 1. Comparison of the new terrain (Left) V.S. the old terrain (Right)

Compare to the previous version, the new island presents a more natural and organic landscape. Hills and height differences between the ecosystems (Highland, Forest, Swamp, and Mountain ruins) are more obvious while transitioning naturally from one to another.

That being said, the environment (trees, rocks, bush, etc.) is currently randomly placed on the map without any sort of planning. Thus the next step is to design and place the models in manners that support the survival gameplay (Resource density, locations, etc.).

Models

Figure 2. Tree model updates and additional models.

The tree models in the forest area are replaced with another model. Additional models like rocks, two types of mushrooms, bush, and grass are also implemented into the scene. The reason for implementing two different mushrooms is because one will be poisonous, while the other will be editable.

Mechanics

Crafting System

The initial version of the crafting system is now in place. The current system allows the player to "craft" any of the three possible items; Tent, axe, and campfire. That being said since the inventory system is not implemented yet, the current crafting system is bound to be significantly modified in the next iteration.

UI

No progress was announced during the milestone deadline meeting or implemented into the project scenes when the report was done. Thus any UI / Visual updates that are made will be included in the next progress report.
